A little while ago I picked up the Call of Cthulhu 40 anniversary starter set pdf while it was on offer at DriveThru RPG. I have been meaning to play a game or two with it ever since then but gaming time is limited and Tales of Argosa RPG has been my main campaign and taken most of my gaming time of late.
I now have a little more time to spend on gaming so I plan to run a couple of one shots using the Cthulhu starter set, beginning with the adventure included in the game “The Paper Chace”.
I have created two characters, Sixpence Berryfield, a doctor of medicine, who is travelling to North Yorkshire with her partner and fiancé, Richard Grey, a retired Infantry Lieutenant. Sixpence has taken a position in a General Practice as a Doctor in the remote moors near her home town of Whitby.
My plan is to solo my way through the starting adventure in book 3 of the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set, ‘The Paper Chase’ in order to help me learn the rules. I will only be using the rules given in the Starter Set, I hope that this set will be enough to play a good few adventures but if I enjoy the game I may invest in the players and keepers books and I am tempted by the solo players handbook available on DrivethruRPG.
The Paper Chase as written is set in Arnoldsberg, Michigan, I will change that to a fictitious village just outside London. It is designed for 1 or 2 players plus a keeper, so that works well. My idea is that this is a stop off or side adventure on their journey up to the North Yorkshire moors. I have taken the liberty of given the couple a car, well Sixpence will need a vehicle for her rounds once she makes it to Yorkshire, assuming she does, also I have allowed Dick to keep his service revolver which he may need in the coming adventures.
These Call of Cthulhu games will be short one offs of 1 or 2 sessions max as I don’t want to detract from my on going Tales of Argosa campaign.
Let the nightmare begin.
