Random Scenario

My solo adventure had stalled. I need to breath some new life into it. Using a Cyberpunk Random Scenario Generator, I got the following to help get the adventure back on track.

Celebrate under threat/New drug on street.
Who is up for it? The mob.
Where is it at? Nightclub
Whats the real story? Government cover up.

Some excellent prompts there. Is the celeb the person Weasel saw entering the Modus Phama building? Could the mob be Hif Klomo the notorious people smuggler? Is the nightclub the Club Jade in the Munroe District? Swapping government for Pan Helix Pharma, is the mega corp covering up something to do with the new Ctac drug being launched by their subsidiary Modus Pharma?

Lets get the adventure started and see what we can find out.

At the end of my last session a Vex* named Kyro turned up at Shonas appartment. Kyro, along with a Mercedes Limo, had been sent by her boss to collect them. Kyro assumed they knew who her boss was so offered no info as to who she worked for and Shona never asked.

Scene 20. Car journey.

Grabbing their stuff and making sure they have arms and armour, Weasel, Kid, Shona and Rook make their way down to the street where Kyro is waiting for them in her limo. Weasel tries to get into the passenger seat but the Blue Striped Bernau* has already taken it and hisses at Weasel when he tries to move the fey feline.

“In the back if you will Mr Weasel”, Kyro tells him, “for your own safety and buckle up tight, its going to be a fun ride”.

Shona sits in the seat right behind Kyro and asks the question “Your boss never told us why he wanted to meet, you able to give us more intel on why we are here”.
Shona makes a Cha check to see if Kyro will tell them why they are here. Shona rolls a natural 20 which is an automatic fail.

“I don’t talk while I drive, not good for my concentration” replies Kyro. With that the limo accelerates and speeds away from Shonas place.

Shona makes a Per check to see if she can tell which district Kyro is taking them to. She needs to roll 17 or less on d20. Roll = 11.

Shona turns her attention to trying to work out where they are heading, “we seem to be going to Sovereign Point”
Rook looks a little alarmed, “Sovereign Point, we wont make it through the check point”.

Question. Do they get stopped at the check point? Likely. Roll = 26 +20. No, because…

As they cross over the water to the island that is Sovereign Point they encounter the main checkpoint. Kyro slows down and stops. The security guards recognise Kyro, the car and in particular the Blue Striped Bernau. One guard speaks briefly to Kyro then waves her through.

Weasel whistles as he gazes out of the limo window at the glittering skyways, opulent buildings and the awe inspiring view over Mendoza Bay.

Soon after they enter Sovereing Bay, Kyro seeps the limo into a parking bay under a luxurious private apartment building, she parks the limo and says in her best tour guide voice, “we have arrived at our destination, if you would all care to follow me I will take you to my boss”.

Scene 21. The smoking lady

Zero

Kyro with the Blue Striped Bernau round her shoulder, leads the party through the opulent apartment. She knocks on a large ornate wooden door and a womans voice tells her to show them in. Kyro opens the door, the Bernau jumps off her shoulder and goes into the room first, followed by Weasel, Shona, Kid and Rook.

The room is large, spacious and expensively furnished. A woman, ash blond, fine clothes and confident gestures for them to sit down. She calls to Kyro, thanking her and asking her to organise drinks for them all. She takes a long thin red cigarette from a case and lights it. “Thank you all for coming and at such short notice”.

Each PC makes a Perc check to see if they recognise the woman, only Rook succeeds. She remembers seeing the woman at the bar of Club Jade earlier in the day.

Weasel replys “Like we had a choice, what does someone with your shine want with us Sumpers”?
Rook asks “Didn’t I see you earlier at Club Jade”?

The woman introduces herself, “very perceptive of you, you must be Rook. You can call me Zero. What do I want with lifers like you, well…”

At that point there is a tap at the door, Zero calls for the person outside to enter and a man walks in carrying a tray with 5 drinks on it. “Thank you Jeeves, put them on the table there. Please, help yourselves to a gin and tonic”.

Weasel picks up a glass and takes a sip, “whoa, nice, thats not your nasty bootleg stuff”.

Zero picks up a glass too, takes a sip and continues smoking and talking. “This is Phoenix Chrome”, Zero seems to just click her fingers and a hologram of a elf appears above the table the drinks were on, “he owns 50% of Modus Phama who have just launched a new revolutionary and inexpensive Ctac pill available to all”.

Weasel recognises the elf he saw entering the Modus building earlier that day, “The one in all the Ctac pill adverts, I saw him enter Modus earlier, he seems to be quite the celeb, except the pill doesn’t work”.

Zero stubs out her cigarette, “Except he believes it does. Pheonix thinks he, Modus and Pan Helix are going to save the world but I believe Pan Helix have been infiltrared by CTAC resistance and know the pills don’t work and will use Pheonix as a scapegoat bringing him and Modus down when they are found out”.

Weasel downs the last of his Gin an T, “and we should care because”.

Zero looks at Kid Sinister, “I’m told you are looking for a vampire. I own club Jade and a few others. Hif Klomo supplies me with taur security guards. Hif Klomo also supplies Pan Helix with guinea pigs to test their pills on, he also supplies blood to vampires, and the taurs he supplies me have been taking patrons from my clubs and handing them to Klomo. You cannot stop Pan Helix launching the pills its too late for that anyway, but you can bring down Klomo and Klomo will lead you to your vampire”.

Kid Sinister looks back at Zero, “and where do we find Hif Klomo”?

“I don’t know how to find him but my club, Club Jade, go back there, get known by his men, thats a start. How you get to meet him is up to you”.

Rook asks “so the girl who had the altercation with the reporter, she’s your daughter”?

“Yes”

“Whos the reporter, what is she after”?

“she thinks Phoenix is responsible for the pills, she wants to bring him down as well”

“and why are you so interested in this Phoenix Chrome”?

“He is my partner”.

Zero brings the meet to a close and gets Kyro to drive the party back to Shonas flat. Weasel feels they are getting closer to the answer of who killed Spark and what happened to Nashu Kamshunir’s brother.
Kid Sinister sees a way to find his vampire, Shona and Rook just want to sleep.

To be continued.

*Blue Striped Bernau – a fey blooded feline and much sought after guardian companion of the uber wealthy.
*Vex – expert wheelman and anti armour expert.

  1. “Jeeves”? Really? With a stereotypical name like that, I’m guessing that it’s a robotic servant, Jeeves model.

There’s an interesting connection of dots here from your oracle, that’s for sure! You may want to entertain the idea of fleshing out some of this backstory of this situation rather than it all coming out in exposition like this, something I had mentioned before with your other story world where they are looking for the Horn.

Zero seems very forthcoming with information here. No matter how much she wants their help, is anyone ever fully honest? Especially in a mystery like this! So regardless of party investment, I’m guessing that any pieces still missing in your puzzle are the secret dangers that lie ahead for the group. Or there have been some half truths. Use your oracle if necessary: you went through all the trouble of making those other characters last month, and they won’t see much light if this mystery is too conveniently solved for our investigative group!

It’s good to see you exercising some character in Weasel, Stu! I think that you need more of that with other characters in the group. Shona and Rook have been like cyphers to readers other than their initial backgrounds. Maybe consider using more dialogue throughout to showcase their individual personalities. This particular encounter would have been a good opportunity with at least two NPCs (my jury is still out on Jeeves) and the pet. I’m not expecting its antagonism with Weasel to end so easily.

I’m expecting more resistance from the group too. Sure, Zero supplied a lead on the vampire, but Klomo doesn’t sound like a pushover by a long shot! And do any of them know of his reputation yet? If not, they’re going to be in a world of hurt very soon. Weasel lucked out in learning that silver bullets don’t work on vampires, but some foes’ weaknesses are not so easily discerned. Look how powerless the group was in dealing with Zero, just going along with the flow when their phones were hacked: if it had been Klomo’s directive rather than Zero’s to round them up, they would likely all be blood banks about now!

I look forward to their challenges still to come! They haven’t been in much danger since their initial run in with the vampire. The Scooby Doo Gang seem threatened more than these (although maybe everyone is just staying low profile in this setting). Even the offstage vampire seems passive in all this: just lurking in the streets, feeling invincible. Is she bored by not wanting to barter with Klomo for blood? Shouldn’t he be trying to strongarm her too. (“You need my supply. No, really, you do.”)

The tinder is definitely being set to be ignited ahead, but let it catch too slowly, and it will just smolder rather than catch. Better keep fanning!

    1. A lot for me to think about there John and a lot that I agree with.
The aim is to try and push this adventure along and bring it to some sort of conclusion before it becomes another solo project that runs our of steam.
Part of the reason it was stalling for me was the lack of action. Combat in Lowlife 2090 is deadly and I know I was being overly protective of the characters and avoiding combat. Things should liven up now I have a clear direction I want the game to travel.
