Recap of part 10. Tilly, Moonwane and the rest of the party entered the cavern system that goes under the city of Zfonroon and will lead them to the harbour area where the bandit leader who is now part of the party has a small sailing ship.

Although they successfully fought off an attack by Blood Hawks, Moonwane suffered 7 hit point damage bringing him down 9hp. Tilly is currently down to 15hp whilst the three remaining members of the party, Farhad the young mage, Karintha the eldritch girl and the bandit leader are unscathed.

Deeper into the caves below Zfonroom.

Chaos Rank: 5

The party leave the cave entrance with its guard of statues and follow the little brook further into the cave system,

Question. Is the scene modified? d10 roll = 3. Yes.

Farhad leads the way, he has been through these caves only once before but remembers them well. The party have nothing to illuminate their way but nothing is needed, the moss which covers the floor and walls gives of a bright green glow. Confident that the caves are deserted and safe to pass through he still keeps the longsword he acquired gripped tightly in his hand. Moonwane carries his battleaxe whilst Tilly and the bandit leader also have longswords at the ready. Only Karintha is unarmed.

The party are startled when they hear the horrendous painful wail of the strange thin creatures with long bright almost fluorescent hair. These creatures resemble gaunt old women but are anything but.

Farhad calls out “Witches Below, two of them”.

The Witches Below.

Hit Dice: 3d8 (14 HP)
AC: 10
Attack: +3 to hit, 1d6+1 damage (bite)
Alignment: Neutral
XP: 100
Notes: Wail (instead of attacking, one of the witches below
may let out a horrendous wail, causing a single foe in near
range to make a saving throw versus polymorph or suffer a
-2 to hit and AC)

Farhad is the closest to the Witches when one of them screams. He must make a save vrs. polymorph. Needing a roll of 13 or higher on d20 he rolls 17 and makes his saving throw avoiding penalties to hit and AC.

I allow Tilly to make a roll against her dex. If she passes she can draw and fire one of her hand held crossbows. Needing 14 or less she rolls 19. A fail.

Tilly draws a crossbow with her free had but realises it is not loaded. She knows she wont have time to load and fire before the creatures are upon them.

Question. Does Karintha know a spell that can help them against the two Witches Below? Unlikely. Roll d100 = 92, Exceptional No.

Karintha tries to remember a spell from the depths of her mind. She knows she has some ability to cast magic but that ability seems to have completely left her.

Moonwane moves towards Farhad. “Is there a way around these two hags”? Farhad shakes his head, “Then we have no choice but to fight our way past them, Tilly if you and our Bandit leader take the one on the left, Farhad and I will deal with the other”.

Combat –

Round 1.

Moonwane uses his ‘Fleet’ skill and charges into the Witch on the right. He only rolls a 7 to hit with his battle axe but his bonuses of +3 make 10, a hit, just, for 1d8+2 damage, he rolls 7 so the first witch takes 9 damage.
The witch tries to bite Moonwane, it rolls 11, even with its +3 to hit it is still well below Moonwanes AC of 16.

Tilly charges into the second creature, She rolls 18 to hit it for 2 damage.
The creature tries to bite Tilly rolling 13 with bonuses. A hit for 4 damage. Tilly is down to 11 hp.
Next to attack is the Bandit who rolls 15 causing 5 damage to the creature which is down to 7hp

Finally Farhad attacks, rolling 5 he fails to hurt the creature on the right but it is down to 5 hp after the damage done to it by Moonwane.

Round 2.

Tilly has the highest initiative, she strikes first attempting to hack the creature with her longsword. d20 =7 +2 bonus, a miss.
The strange creature dodges Tillys blow and lunges at her. d20 = 14 +3 bonus, a hit for 5 damage. Tilly now has 6hp left.
The Bandit sees an opening to lunge at the Witch Below. d20 = 4 +2 bonus, a miss. He slips on the damp florescent moss and misses.

Moonwane brings his battleaxe down on the creature he is against. d20 = 4 +3 bonus, a miss.
Somehow the Witch Below manages to avoid his blow and goes on the attack itself. d20 = 7 +3bonus, a miss. Moonwanes armour stops the creatures bite.
Farhad, finding the longsword unwieldly tries one more blow. d20 = 20, a hit for 5 damage. The Witch below drops to ground, Farhad looks at his longsword in disbelief.

Round 3.

Tilly, getting weaker from the damage she has taken, aims another slash with her longsword. d20 = 17 +2 bonus, a hit for 8 damage. This time her aim is true and the last Witch Below falls.

Tilly looks exhausted from the combat, “we need to get out of here and get to that ship and away from here, I need rest”.
Farhad and the Bandit search the bodies of the two Witches Below.

Question. Do they find anything useful on the Witches? Unlikely. d100 = 40, No.

Finding nothing of use and eager to get to the relative safety of the small ship, the party press on through the caves.

Question. Do they encounter anything else in the caves? 50/50. d100 = 54, No.

It takes them a further hour or so to reach the end of the cavern under the town of Zfonroon, when they do it is almost dusk, the harbour and the ship are just a short walk away. There is still some activity going on in the harbour but it seems fairly quiet and the party hope they can avoid being noticed as they make their way to the little ship.

Question. Do the party make to the ship without any unwanted attention? 50/50. d100 = 38, Yes.

Once they are aboard the small sailing vessel, the bandit leader gives instructions to get the ship out into the open waters. Farhad seems to have sailed before and knows what he is doing. Tilly climbs the mast and sits in the little crows nest, quickly falling asleep. Moonwane looks back at the port of Zfonroon, hoping never to see the place again. He feels something on his shoulder purring down his ear, Whiskers the little winged cat is back. Karintha sits alone, she looks troubled, worried that she has lost her magic again.

To be continued.
