In order to explore the the wastelands of The Ruin you will need to create a survivor, someone who was born in this broken world.
The Ruin, Survivors, p16
For this solo adventure I am going to use two characters I previously created, Rosa Garcia and Snipe. I want a third character to join them and it will be this adventurer I will create in this post.
The Character Sheet.
Character sheets for male and female characters are available for The Ruin d100. The only difference between the two is the picture on the second page, one depicts a male survivor, the other a female survivor. You can print off a full colour version or the printer friendly version which I am going to use, (pictured here).
Attributes.
First part of the character creation deals with attributes. There are 6 and each of these starts at 10 points. You then have 8 points to distribute between the six attributes (the rule book says amongst the five attributes but I think that must be an error). After I have distributed the 8 points my attributes are :-
Strength : 12
Dexterity : 11
Health : 11
Intelligence : 12
Instinct : 12
Social :10
Skills.
The next part of the character creation goes on to discuss skills. Basically each skill is linked to an attribute and the attributes base value is the skill starting percentage. We will not know the final base value for each attribute until the end of the character creation process so we will come back to skills later.
Upbringing.
Next we have to find out who our parents were. We roll d10 and check against the upbringing table, I roll a 10 so my characters parents were Military, my character gets +2 Str and +1 Dex, so their attributes now look like this :-
Strength : 14
Dexterity : 12
Health : 11
Intelligence : 12
Instinct : 12
Social :10
Early Years.
We now roll d10 against the early years table to determine how our character lived growing up. I roll 4 so our character gets Tribal, hunting and surviving outside in what was left of the wilderness. Our character get +20% to each of the following skills :-
Fight
Survival
Search
Traits.
Traits are optional but really enhance the character. Each trait gives the character a benefit but also gives them a flaw.
There are 20 traits, you can choose one but I am going to roll d20 against the Traits table and see what it gives me. Rolling 14, our character has the trait ‘Night Vision’ and receives no penalties for actions done in darkness but in light they will an extra -10% penalty for shooting beyond ranges of long range or above.
Roles.
Each character must choose a role. I would say that roles are like character classes and really define the character and how they act within the settlement. I have decided that our character will be a Hunter so they will provide the settlement with food and skins for use and trade, they will also be used as a scout.
Our character gets the following benefits for being a hunter :-
Attributes : Dex +2, Ins +2, Int +1, Str +1, Hth +2
Our characters final attributes are
Strength : 13 (+3 Modifier)
Dexterity : 13 (+3)
Health : 13 (+3)
Intelligence : 13 (+3)
Instinct : 14 (+4)
Social :10 (0)
Derived Stat Bonus :-
Ranged Damage +1
Grit +3
Wounds +3
Initiative +2
Guts +10%
Skills :-
Survival and Ranged +25%
Search and Knowledge +20%
Fighting and Athletics +15%
Special Ability –

Starting Gear –
our character starts with the following –
3 items of equipment

Derived Stats.
Damage –
Melee +3
Ranged +4 (3+1 from attribute + derived stat bonus)
Grit – 9 (Str + Hth bonus + derived stat bonus)
Wounds – 19 (Hth base value + Str bonus + derived stat bonus)
Initiative – 6 + d10 (Ins bonus + derived stat bonus)
Guts – 80% (Ins x 5 + derived stat bonus)
Other Numbers.
Our character is made up of several other numbers which may affect their everyday life.
Rad Level – 0
Healing Rate – 3
Survival Points – 10
Reputation – 0
Skills.
Finally, our character gets INT x 10 (130) %points to distribute amongst their skills.
And this is our finished character, Ronan Wolfe, ready to join Rosa Garcia and Snipe on a journey in to the wasteland.
