Magical Item Rewards.

Everyone loves magical items and I am no exception. My characters are destined to come face to face with the evil Necromancer and his legion of the damned. The party will need magical aid to have any chance of defeating him.

  1. Amulet of True Sight: Allows the wearer to see through illusions and detect hidden threats, invaluable against the necromancer’s tricks.
  2. Cloak of Shadows: Provides invisibility for short periods, perfect for
    stealth missions or escapes.
  3. Frostfire Elixir: A potion that grants the drinker immunity to cold and the ability to conjure flames, balancing the elements.
  4. Enchanted Arrows: Arrows that never miss their target and can
    pierce through magical barriers.
  5. Faewood Staff: A staff that can summon woodland creatures to aid
in battles or provide guidance through the wilds.

Night amongst the Fox Fairies.

Fox Fairy. A bipedal fox like fay creature.

The Fox Faries have taken the party deeper in to the woodland west of Winterton. Just as darkness is about to engulf them they arrive at the Fox Faries den and are shown inside.

They are taken down a short narrow corridor which is little more than 4 feet in hight, causing the party to walk stooped foreword. The Fox Fairy leader apologies for the parties obvious discomfort, they have few visitors taller than 3′. The moose remains outside and Crea with it, Rhian gives Crea her cloak of warmth to stave off the bitter cold.

The corridor opens up into a much larger room, high enough for all to stand up. There are 16 Fox Fairies including the eight that escorted the party here. Merriment and chatter, along with the smell of hot food fill the room.

Two elderly Fox Faries, a dog and a vixen, step forward and greet the party, inviting them to sit around a low table. Two young ones bring dishes of hot warming stew, consisting mostly of meat which the party gratefully take. A third Fox takes a dish outside to Crea. The old dog fox talks while the companions eat.

He tells them that the forest is deeply affected by the bitter cold and deep snow. The veil between the lands of the living and the dead has been weakened, undead have been seen in the forests, they threaten not just men but the realm of the fox faries too. He knows that the balance must be restored or his realm is doomed.

The vixen takes up the tale. She reviles to Rhian and her companions an ancient prophecy that speaks of them as the chosen ones, of their role in defeating the necromancer and thus closing the vale.

The old dog fox stands up, “we have gifts for each of you to help you in your task, but they can keep until the morning, for now eat, drink and enjoy our company.

The fox fairies entertain the companions long into the evening, eventually, tired and with bellies full they all drift into a deep slumber. In the morning when the companions awake, the fox fairies are gone from the chamber, all bar the old dog fox and vixen.

On the low table are five artifacts, one for each of the party. The old dog fox picks up the first one and walks round the table to Hew d’Winterton.

amulet of true sight
Amulet of True Sight

“for you my warrior friend, I have an amulet, wear it close to your chest. With this you will see past the necromancers illusions”.

Hew takes the amulet and thanks the dog fox. He ties a strong length of string to the amulet and places it around his neck, keeping it facing to his front.

Cloak of shadows

The vixon now stands up and picks up the next artifact. She wals around the table thiis time to Karina the bard. In the vixens paws is a long dark grey cloak, “not quite the clothing you would normally wear my young songstress, but this cloak will allow you to move without being seen. You will have need of it soon.

Karina thanks the fox fairies for their generosity. She takes the cloak with humble gratitude and places it in her back pack.

a small bottle of Frostfire Elexir

Now the dog fox picks up a small jar and takes it to Strawberri, “and for you my fae lady, I have this elixir, a potion of Frostfire. There is enough for three uses but use it only when you must”, He looks up at the young fae foundling, “you have yet to find your true belonging, soon you will”

Strawberri , a look of slight bewilderment on her face, takes the small bottle and thanks the elderly fox, she asks him to tell her more of what he knows about her but he says nothing.

magical enchanted arrows

Now the Vixen picks up a dozen arrows from the table and hands them to Rhian, “With these arrows your aim will be true, use them and the sword you found only in your greatest peril”.

Rhian takes the arrows and thanks the vixen who talks more, “Our realms future depends on you Rhian, we can aid you only so much but the rest is down to you”.

Rhian feels the weight of a great burden upon her soul, “I am not sure if I can do as you bit my lady”.

The vixen smiles and reassures her, “you can, with the aid of your friends, you can”.

Feywood staff

The dog fox picks up the final artifact from the table and hands it to Culdus, “and for you my young cleric, a staff. Use this to call upon the creatures of the woods to aid you”.

“But how do I summon them, how do I use the staff, you have not told me”.

Strawberri Cottoncloud looks at the staff, “Faewood, I recognise it, a staff of faewood”.

The old fox nods, “indeed it is. Culdus, fear not, when the time to use the staff comes, you will know how to use it”.

With that the elder fox fairies lead the companions out of their den. Sanding next to Crea and her moose are the eight fox faries who brought them to their den.

The elderly vixon says goodbye to them all, “My warriors will lead you to the edge of the woods, takes care and make all speed. I know our paths will meet again, until then, farewell”.

To be continued.

Note: I think one of the important things with solo gaming is that, ‘if you want something to happen, make it happen’, in this post I knew I wanted the fox fairies to give aid to the party. The only slightly random part was picking the magical artifacts and who got what. This post is basically how I imagined the encounter to go. Using an oracle was unnecessary and could have taken me down a route I did not want to go down.
Happy gaming.

  1. Really digging these Fox Faeries! And I love the veil between the lands of the living and the dead being weakened. Cool contrast between the imagery of the cozy fox fae burrow on a cold winter’s night and what may await the companions in the frozen wilderness. Bring an extra pair of wool socks!

So, when it comes to solo play and using a packaged ‘module’ or adventure, what is the preferred format/layout? Especially for folks newish to the genre. In other words, how much information would a reader/player preferred being held back, or put further along in the adventure, in order to maintain a balance of flow, playability, and mystery? Should all secrets be revealed up front, as in a ‘DM Info’ section, or dispersed in a way that keeps the reader/player (aka DM) in the dark (mostly), until the end. Apologies for the rambling question – there’s probably an easier way to ask, but hopefully you get my drift. 🙂

    1. Extra wool socks and a pair of Damyan’s Winter Boots each for sure.

That’s a great question by the way, and perhaps has no one simple answer.
If its something specifically written for solo play then secrets dispersed, keeping player in the dark would be my way to go, especially for those new to solo play. That said, I don’t find having all secrets revealed up front a problem either, you just have to remember that your characters don’t know what you know and often the oracle will throw up a result which alters thing anyway.
How to play published adventures deserves exploring further, and I will certainly try to answer more fully with a post or two over the next few days.
