A quick catchup.

PC review.

Weasel has bought himself a basic Hon Hai Echo cellphone for 1k cera leaving him still with a healthy 22050 Cera.
Convinced that a cell number and cryptic message on the back of a blister pack of CTAC pills will give him answers to who killed Spike and why, he called it, no one answered. He has discovered the number belongs to one Lavantha Ashterka.

Kid Sinister is on the trail of a vampire that is causing problems in the Munroe district. One of his contacts, a bounty hunter, has suggested he starts his search at the Club Jade which is next door to where Spike lived. He also has 6 silver bullets, useless against a vampire but if they should stumble upon a werewolf the bullets may come in handy.

Shona tried to do some digging into the said Club Jade but she failed to get any useful info apart from a warning that it was safer to keep away from the place.

Rook contacted an Occult Trader who, for a fee of 1300 Cera, supplied her with a vampire hunting kit. Rook is now down to 21750 Cera.

With Ceracoin to burn, the PC’s decide to source some additional gear before they do anything else. Time is of the essence so they limit themselves to only buying easily available items.

Weasel is able to pick up a Kelvar Jacket, he is able to get one that is anti-burn and anti-bast which sets him back 2100 ₵ and raises his AR to 3. He also picks up an M K Lawmaker sub-machine pistol and ammo which sets him back a further 250₵. Both items are available, it takes him 1 hour to get the SMP and 3 hours to collect his Jacket.

Kid Sinister picks up a First Aid Kit (Organ Mart Responder, cost 500₵). He also picks up a Nakajima spytracker surveillance sweeper (+3 on luck roll) for 4500₵. He also spend 50₵ on some misc. gear, (a backpack, flashlight, cable ties, duct tape, pens and notebook). It takes him 4 hours to complete his purchases.

Shona having been shot up badly in the partys previous adventure decides to invest in a Kelvar Jacket with anti-burn and anti-shock costing 2100₵. She also upgrades her Benelli pistol by purchasing a Remington Covert for 350₵. She also buys some Chemmace 20₵ and more ammo for her pistols 80₵. All this take Shona 3 hours to complete.

Rook too buys a Kelvar coat for 800₵. She attempts to by a first aid kit but Kid Sinister took the last one. She takes 1 hour to buy her coat.

Scene 13 – Rook talks to Nashu Kamshunar.

With a few hours to spare before the others arrive back from their shopping trip Rook decides to contact her friend and now patron, Nashu Kamshunar. Rook wants to know if Nashu has any info on Club Jade.

Question. Is Nashu able to give Rook any useful information about the club? 50/50. d100 =45 No, because…

Nashu apologises to Rook, night clubs are not her scene, she knows nothing about Club Jade because she has never heard of it, she asks Rook if its important. Rook replies that it could be as it is next door to where Spark lived and it is possible that Spark and Nashus brother Enli may have frequented the club. Rook thanks Nashu for her time and promises that at soon as they have more information she will be let Nashu know.

Before Nashu can drop the call, Rook fires in a second question “Nash, just on more thing, you know someone called Lavantha Ashterka?

Question. Does Nashu know of Ashterka? 50/50. d100=53. Yes,but…

“Lavantha. Sure, we were friends once, moved around in the same circles, then she got involved with the Peoples First lot and we drifted apart. I haven’t seen or spoken to her in a long time. Why do you ask?”

Rook pauses then answers Nashu’s question, “I’m not sure, she has come up as possible lead in your brothers disappearance. We are trying to trace her. All we know is that she has a cell registered to her in the Central Business District but no address. Thats all we know..

Question. Does Nashu have an address Ashterka? 50/50. d100=52. Yes,but…

Nashu tells Rook to wait a moment, “She use to work for a pharmaceutical firm called Modus but that was some time ago, before she got involved with People First. I can give you the address if you want to check Modus out”.

Rook takes note of the address an thanks Nash again for her time. Feeling like she has got somewhere she makes herself a drink and awaits the return of Weasel, Kid and Shona.

Scene 14 – outside Modus Pharmaceutical.

Weather. Overcast and cool with drizzle. Low CTAC count.
Time. Early afternoon, around 2pm.

Weasel and Shona decide it is safer if only they head to the Central Business District, security is high there and an unlicensed Exarch and Mage trying to enter the district is just too risky. Rook and Kid Sinister will head to Club Jade and check it out, Weasel and Shona will meet them there later.

Taking the subway, Weasel and Shona are soon at a station near the Modus Pharma building.

Question. Is everything as expected at the subway station? 50/50. d100=67. Yes.

Rolling 13 on the Checkpoint Table I get – Keepers & Sergeant: Four Peacekeepers with Rybak S32
SMGs and a Sergeant . Metal detector, chem sensor, drug wand.
Careful ID checks (-2 penalty using Fake IDs).

Deciding they should try to get through the checkpoint separately, Weasel walks up to the keepers first, fake ID in hand.

Luck roll of 9 or less on d20 needed to get through checkpoint. Roll = 8.

The keepers are stopping and checking everyone. Weasel hands over his fake id which shows him to be a private detective with a licence to carry guns. At first the keeper seems unsure and hands the id to his sergeant who asks Weasel why he is here. Weasel replies that he has been hired by Modus Pharma, issues with People First Militia infiltrating the company. Believing his story, the Sergeant hands Weasel his id back and lets him through.

Shona hangs back until she sees Weasel go through. She takes a gamble and uses her real id saying she is here for an audition with an advertising agency,

Question. Does the keeper believe Shona? 50/50. d100 = 14. No.

The guard is suspicious and asks Shona for more details of here audition.

Shona must make a Luck(Cha) roll to see if she can persuade the keeper to let her through. She needs to roll 14 (11 +3 cha bonus). d20 roll =19, she fails.

Shona’s answers are less than convincing and the keeper, his hand on his Rybak S32 SMG waves her away, telling her to leave before he searches her for weapons and drugs. Shona has no option but to let Weasel continue on his own whilst she makes her way to the Munroe district and the rendezvous with Kid and Rook at Club Jade.

Weasel’s cybereyes follow Shona as she heads back to the subway train, relieved that she wasn’t searched and happy that she is no longer with him, he is free to get on with his plan if you call walking up to the Modus reception desk and asking to see Lavantha Ashterka a plan.

As he nears the Modus Phama building he cannot help but be drawn to the fact that the sidewalk consists of slabs of flickering screens, showing adverts for various Modus Phama products, in particular their inexpensive over the counter CTAC pills. A few yards before the main entrance to Modus, Weasel stops.

A large black limo is parked outside the entrance to Modus Phama, 7 skorn security guards are keeping everyone back from the entrance while a tall thin sharp dressed male elf, very pale skin tone, walking cane, dark shades, with a large Umbral Hound exit the limo. A bunch of reporters and photographers are trying to get an brief interview and photos of the man and his hound, without any luck.

Weasel looks down at his feet. There instead of a paving slab is a flickering screen advertising CTAC pills and advertising them is the Elf who has just got out of the limo and walked into Modus Phama, “So how does a delf advertising CTAC pills become a celebrity and why has he passed me by”?

“Because he is rich, has a 50% share in Modus and his new CTAC pills are going to save the world, only they won’t” answers a woman holding a camera standing next to Weasel.

Weasel turns to face the woman, “and you know this because”?

“I worked for him, now I plan to expose him for the fraud he is”.

Weasel shows the woman his fake id card which shows him as a private detective, “I’m here to meet Lavantha Ashterka, that wouldn’t be you”?

“You’re right, it wouldn’t be”.

“She works for Modus though, right, you know her”?

“I knew her and no, she doesn’t work for Modus, not any more. Where are you supposed to meet her”?

Weasel puts his id away and comes clean, “I’m not. I’m investigating a murder and I hoped she could help, hoped she still worked here, looks like I’m out of luck”.

The woman offers Weasel the following “I didn’t know her that well, just enough to say hello. Lavantha worked on the CTAC pill project. One day she walked out and never came back. I don’t know why but I can guess. Rumor had it she had joined People First Militia. Maybe she had. I think she got too close to knowing the truth about Modus Phama”.

“and that is”?

The woman puts her camera in to a backpack and points to the Modus building, “I’m sorry, I have to go. The answers you need are inside that place”. With that she disappears into the busy street.

Weasel decides to try and get into the Modus building.

inside a cyberpunk office building

Weasel is suprised to find he is able to walk straight into the building without anyone stopping him. He walks up to the reception desk and asks to see Lavantha Ashterka.

To be continued.

  1. This sounds like a very fruitful session, and it’s great to see so many characters in the thick of things! A clock mechanic might be cool to raise the stakes, but I think that you’ve made the investigation great!

I like seeing characterization coming through, and Weasel’s response last time to no one answering the phone lead as compared with the cost of that phone versus him having a lot of Cera left is a great example of how someone who is always close to or at zilch in their bank account would respond. Keep up the efforts!

Are you a big fan of investigative-type stories? I’ve been listening to a 40K story that has epic stakes called Vaults Of Terra, the first in the series being The Carrion Throne. Your characters probably won’t be engaged in something with such high stakes this time around, but since Lowlife 2090 doesn’t need the grandiosity of 40K, it feels plenty grounded. I can hardly wait to read more!

  2. Thanks John.
I think cyberpunk really lends itself to an investigative type game. I do find mystery and investigations difficult to play solo but if I don’t think about it to deeply and just let things happen it can be great fun.
I haven’t read the Vaults of Terra series. The grim darkness of the 41st millennium certainly makes a great setting for a high stakes investigative noir style story. I will certainly look The Carrion Throne up. It could be inspired me to run a game set in the 40k universe,
