I am working my way through each of the 9 character classes available to players in the ‘Tales of Argosa’ RPG by Pickpocket Press. For todays January 2024 character a day challenge I will be creating a Magic User.

Most of the character generation in ToA is, or can be, random which makes it perfect for solo play and by following the 17 steps in the rule book you can generate a character really quickly.

Here is how my Magic User character was created.

Step 1. Roll 1d12 for race. I roll 6 so this character is an Human

Step 2. Roll d66 for background. I roll 31 so this character was a Bone Grubber and gains +1 Perc, the skill ‘Detection’ and a sack of broken glass.

Step 3. Roll 3d6 for attributes. I roll 6, 8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12. As one roll must be 13 or above and one 15 or above, the 6 is changed to 13 and the 8 to 15. I assign the rolls to the attributes as follows –
Str: 9 Dex: 10 Con: 13 Int: 15 Perc: 13(includes +1 gained from step 2) Will: 10 Cha: 11

Step 4. Choose class. As mentioned above this character will be a ‘Magic User’.

Step 5. My Mages Luck is 11, Re-rolls 2 and DDM 1.

Step 6. Initiative is Dex + Int/2 rounded down so 10+15/2 = 12.

Step 7. Hit points = Con score plus level, so 14.

Step 8. Death Save is 10 + Con mod so 11.

Step 9. Skills – Arcane Lore, Apothecary, Gather Info, Divine Lore, General Lore and Detection (see step 2 above).

Step 10. Class Abilities. Spellcraft, (spells known: strange joining, infuse animus)
Sense Magic.

Step 11. Battle Gear slots = 5, Pack Gear slots = 5
Pack Gear. Torch, bedroll, 5 days rations.
Tinderbox and 10 silvers in a pouch.
Class Starting Gear. longsword (1d8), Leather Armour (+1 AC), Spellbook

Step 12. AC = 10 + 1(leathers) so 11

Step 13. Attack bonus = 0 (melee), +1 (ranged)

Step 14. Languages – common tongue plus two other (will depend on the setting, yet to be decided).

Step 15. Age 1d20+16 = 21 years

Step 16. Name: Corvex (male), Personality: Mirthless. (rolled randomly from the names and personality tables).

Step 17. Party Bond. Respected rivals on a job. Joined by fate.
